Dominic Thiem and Martin Klizan in Kitzbühel 2018

The only detail that was not quite right that summer evening 2018 was unfortunately the decisive one: The fact that Dominic Thiem had lost his second round match in Kitzbühel against Martin Klizan 5-7 in the third set. Otherwise: Full house at the foot of the Kitzbüheler Horn, pleasant temperatures, and also very respectable tennis from both players.

At least the latter can also be expected in Monte Carlo on Wednesday, when Thiem and Klizan (depending on the count) face each other for the fifth or sixth time. To date, there have been four encounters on the ATP tour in the main fields, of which Thiem could only win the youngest in the 2018 St. Petersburg final. However, the two players also played in the qualification for the Australian Open 2014, when Thiem also prevailed.

Dominic Thiem with new fun in the game

Martin Klizan has played rather inconspicuously this season, also owing to his battered body. 29-year-old from Bratislava could only play twelve games in 2019, had to give up injured against Alexander Zverev in Indian Wells. The last time in Miami was in round one against Lorenzo Sonego. In Monte Carlo, Federico Delbonis won at least on Monday.

Dominic Thiem, on the other hand, has found the fun of tennis again and has put the sporting cooperation with Günter Bresnik on hold until further notice. In Monte Carlo there has never been more than the quarter-finals, as number four of the tournament this should also be the minimum goal. After Martin Klizan, another man who likes to torture Thiem could wait: David Goffin. Dominic Thiem also has bad memories of the Belgians and Kitzbühel - in 2014 the local hero Goffin lost in the final of the largest domestic clay court tournament.
