Dominic Thiem will intervene in the ATP Masters 1000 tournament in Monte Carlo on Tuesday at the earliest, but the Austrian number one is already very familiar with the locations. On Saturday Thiem played a few points in a charity event, his first round opponent will be determined on Monday between the two veterans Federico Delbonis and Martin Klizan.

The team Thiem can definitely prepare for a left-hander, with Klizan Thiem historically had some problems, but was able to defeat the Slovak in St. Petersburg last autumn for the first time. Nicolas Massu is now officially preparing the match. Now a matter of course for Dominic Thiem.

All thanks to Bresnik

"The situation in Rio was the same as it is now, only back then the public didn't know it, then only I knew it," said Thiem in Monte Carlo. Massu had joined the team in Buenos Aires, had there Thiem reached the semi-finals in Rio de Janeiro in the first match against the eventual tournament winner Laslo Djere.

Günter Bresnik will be absent until further notice. "There is a separation in terms of tennis," said Thiem, who hopes that his longtime coach will remain in another position. After all, he owes everything to this. "But at the moment I have chosen a new path in terms of tennis." Physiotherapist Alex Stober stays with the "old" tribe, and fitness coach Duglas Cordero has been new for a few weeks. Mother Karin Thiem had also shown herself regularly at her son's side in the most recent tournaments.

Rafael Nadal's favorite

To date, Thiem has only reached the quarter-finals in Monte Carlo, but of course still belongs to the narrow circle of favorites. In which Rafael Nadal stands out again. The Spaniard would like to take full advantage of the dozen tournament wins in the Principality. In the past two years, Nadal has only lost two matches on clay - both against Dominic Thiem. Alexander Zverev also has it on the bill. After all, the German won last year in Madrid and reached the final in Rome. Where he was stopped by a rain break on the way to victory. But first, Thiem was allowed to take a tour of the Prince's Palace with the other top players - in fine thread.
