It was perfectly arranged on May 1st, 2019 at MTTC Iphitos, even the preliminary program for the first appearance of defending champion Alexander Zverev went perfectly according to plan: Diego Schwartzman and Christian Garin did without a marathon, giving the more than 4,000 spectators enough time to pretend to strengthen the match of Zverev. He, in turn, had a familiar face in his box - father Alexander sr. had returned to the tennis court after a few weeks of absence due to illness, and Boris Becker had also found a seat in the bleachers on the center court.
Zverev started beating Juan Ignacio Londero, gave up his first service game to zero and subsequently won four games to make it 4-1. The Argentinean struggled back into the match, initially a solid presentation from the baseline was enough. Zverev was basically responsible for all points, be it through winning streaks or through own mistakes.
Zverev now against Garin
After all, Zverev could rely on his first serve - Londero scored less than a fifth of the points in the first round where the German scored the first attempt. Londero was not so dominant as the server, giving up his 5: 7 serve after 39 minutes.
Zverev has been in Munich for a week, the temperatures in his second round match had again adjusted to those seven days ago. Rather to the advantage of the native of Hamburg, who is basically easier on faster courts than his Argentinian opponent. With the break to 3-1, Zverev set the course for victory, Londero simply lacked the means to endanger the title holder of the past two years. After a playing time of 64 minutes it was 7: 5 and 6: 1 for the German.
In the quarterfinals on Friday, Zverev will meet Christian Garin. The Chilean has improved enormously this year, taking his first title on the ATP tour in Houston. Garin would also be a potential opponent of Zverev at the Davis Cup final tournament in Madrid in November this year. As is known, Alexander Zverev was not yet able to warm up for this event.
