Philipp Kohlschreiber failed in the first round of the ATP tournament in Munich. The 38-year-old from Augsburg, who had received a wild card for the main draw from tournament director Patrik Kühnen, lost in a German duel to Daniel Altmaier (Kempen) after a tough struggle 6:7 (5:7), 6:3, 1:6.

Kohlschreiber had won the tournament at the MTTC Iphitos in 2007, 2012 and 2106, but is now only 132nd in the world rankings. The crowd favorite was able to improve again after the first set against Altmaier, but then had no chance in the decisive round. After 2:25 hours, Altmaier used his second match point.

Altmaier now against Kecmanovic

In the round of 16, Altmaier meets Miomir Kecmanovic, on whom the first of only five Germans in the main draw had failed in the young Max Hans Rehberg. The Serb, seeded number seven, defeated the 18-year-old from Munich, who is only ranked 1067 in the world and also received a wild card, 6-2, 6-3.

Kohlschreiber played only his fourth match in the main draw of an ATP tournament this year against Altmaier, who is 15 years his junior and has reached the best position of his career in the world rankings with rank 69. Most recently, he failed in Rotterdam in the first round of qualifying.

Before the start of the tournament, Kohlschreiber had emphasized that he knew that "my time is running out". However, he still wants to "go full throttle" until Wimbledon, and his career could continue after that. "If I play well and get points and get into tournaments I want to play in, I would go on," he said. This also applies to 2023.
