It was by no means an easy few weeks that Casper Ruud has had. Defeat in the US Open final - and then two opening defeats in a row. No, the Norwegian didn't want to come together on indoor hard court. He himself did not want to deny that.
In Paris-Bercy the Norwegian started successfully. The third in the world rankings started like a fire brigade against local hero Richard Gasquet. Ruud managed an early break, Gasquet saw no land - 6-1 after just 23 minutes, section one went to the favorites.
Ruud nervous
Gasquet didn't want to give up in front of a home crowd that quickly. The Frenchman stepped up a gear and made the second set extremely balanced. And already had Ruud where he wanted him in the tie-break. Gasquet then missed a 5:3 lead, Ruud remained strong and closed the sack a little later.
In the round of 16, the Norwegian will now face the winner in the duel between Lorenzo Musetti and Nikoloz Basilashvili. Denis Shapovalov is also in the round of 16. The Vienna finalist fought a hard fight with Francisco Cerundolo, but won in three sets.
