Peter Gojowczyk is in the round of 16 at the ATP grass tournament in Newport

Peter Gojowczyk extended the grass season by a week at the ATP World Tour 250 tournament in Newport, and with success. Munich is in the round of 16 in the US state of Rhode Island. The 32-year-old won his opening game against Frenchman Ugo Humbert 7-5, 6-4 in the classic game at the Newport Casino, which is also home to the International Tennis Hall of Fame. However, the next challenge will be much trickier - serve cannon John Isner is waiting. The local hero has already won the tournament four times (2011-12, 2017, 2019). Also in the USA is Dominik Koepfer, who will play against a qualifier in his first encounter tomorrow.

However, there is no good news to report from Bastad in Sweden. There, Daniel Altmaier suffered a first-round defeat. The 23-year-old from Kempen lost 4: 6, 6: 7 (5) against local hero Elias Ymer at the ATP 250 clay court event. Altmaier had already led 5-1 in the tie-break of the second set, but then didn't score any more. The current world number 62. had recently failed in Wimbledon - also at the start - in three sets against Ymer's younger brother Mikael.
