ATP: "Second Level" - Austrian Roundup of calendar week 34
Unfortunately, from an Austrian point of view, not too much is happening on the big ATP tour at the moment. One more reason to dedicate yourself to the athletes from the second row.

Dominic Thiem has already declared the current season over due to his wrist injury, Dennis Novak is still at home with his wife and his newborn offspring. Nevertheless, some Austrians are professionally playing tennis around the globe. We have compiled the most important results and events of this week for you here:
- As reported, unfortunately no Austrian could qualify for this year's US Open in the individual. While Sebastian Ofner was already in round one of the preliminary round against the Taiwanese Jason Jung with 5: 7, 4: 6, Jurij Rodionov managed to win over the Serbian Danilo Petrovic (6: 4, 6: 3) and the Italian Federico Gaio (6: 4, 6: 4) in the third and final round, where he was lost in the 1: 6, 2: 6 against Kamil Majchrzak from Poland.
- At least in doubles, two Austrian men are represented in New York: Oliver Marach and Philipp Oswald. The Styrian and Vorarlbergers were in action at the preparatory tournament in Winston-Salem this week. At the start, the two took the Belgian team Sander Gille and Joran Viegen out of the competition, in the quarter-finals they benefited from an injury-related where the two seeded French Nicolas Mahut and Fabrice Martin. In the semifinals, a 3: 6, 3: 6 against Marcelo Arevalo (El Salvador) and Matwe Middelkoop (Netherlands) brought the end of the flagpole. Arevalo / Middelkoop finally won the final of the ATP World Tour 250 event against Ivan Dodig (Croatia) and Austin Krajicek (USA) 6: 7 (5), 7: 5, 10: 6.
- The ATP Challenger 80 tournament in Warsaw saw two Austrians in action - Lucas Miedler and Alexander Erler - together also in doubles. The players were put to a severe test of patience due to the bad weather in Poland. Lucas Miedler apparently knew how to deal with the situation well, as he defeated the Croatian Duje Ajdukovic 6: 3, 3: 6, 6: 1 at the start. Also in the round of 16, the Lower Austrian was able to prevail 7: 5, 6: 0 against Poland's Szymon Kielan, who had entered the tournament with a wildcard. In the quarter-finals, however, was against the second seeded Slovak Jozef Kovalik with 4: 6, 4: 6. Erler lost 6: 2, 5: 7, 3: 6 against the Argentinean Nicolas Kicker right from the start. In doubles, the two Austrians suffered a 7: 6 (5), - 2: 6, -5: 10 defeat right at the start against the German-Dutch pairing Julian Lenz and Sem Verbeek.
- At the ITF clay court event in Bad Waltersdorf, Styria, worth 15,000 US dollars, Lukas Krainer from Carinthia (ATP 861) is in the final. There he meets the German Timo Stodder (ATP 868). For the 20-year-old from Klagenfurt, it is the second participation in the finals this year. The double competition has already been decided: Krainer also stood alongside Croatian Admir Kalender in the final, where they were defeated by the purely Austrian pairing Lukas Neumayer and Neil Oberleitner with 7: 5, 3: 6 and 7:10. For Oberleitner it was the eighth double tournament victory on the ITF tour this year - with five different partners, mind you. Collecting points is therefore slightly grueling at this tournament level. After all, a place in the top 400 of the ATP ranking is currently possible for the Viennese.
