Daniil Medvedev apparently did no harm in the break he took after winning home in St. Petersburg: The Russian US Open finalist only defeated Briton Cameron Norrie in the second round of the ATP Masters 1000 tournament in Shanghai 54 minutes of play with 6: 3 and 6: 1. Medvedev has reached the final in each of his last five tournaments, the events in Cincinnati and St. Petersburg won.

Roger Federer had slight problems when he entered the penultimate 1000 of the year with Albert Ramos-Vinolas after a smoothly won first set, but ultimately prevailed with 6: 2 and 7: 6 (5).

Andy Murray did another marathon. Fabio Fognini was the two-time gold medalist and three-time Shanghai champion on the court for more than three hours before losing 6: 7 (4), 6: 2 and 6: 7 (). In the twelfth game of the decision set, Murray served on the move into the third round, Fognini made another comeback. And quickly put in the tie-break to 6: 1. The Italian, who thus maintained his chances of qualifying for the ATP final, used the second match ball after 3:10 hours.

Beijing winners Dominic Thiem and Alexander Zverev will only intervene on Wednesday. Zverev will not be playing against French qualifier Jeremy Chardy until 8 a.m.CEST. Dominic Thiem meets Pablo Carreno Busta in the second match after 12:30 p.m. in the night session.
