At Stan Wawrinka, this extends an injury-related break that has lasted since the ATP 250 event in Doha. There the Swiss failed in the first round, after which the former world number three underwent an operation, from which Wawrinka does not seem to have recovered.

Even with Dominic Thiem, the cancellation is based on an injury. The 2020 US Open winner will not have recovered from his wrist injury until the ATP Masters 1000 event in Toronto, which has slowed the Austrian since the ATP 250 tournament in Mallorca. For the Lichtenwörther a return to the US Open is the declared goal.

Djokovic probably saves strength

There are other reasons why Novak Djokovic will not travel to Canada either. The Serb is currently playing in Tokyo at the Olympic Games and will then take a break to fight for the calendar or even the golden slam in Flushing Meadows.

The organizers reacted accordingly with understanding: "After his great run to his record-breaking 20th Grand Slam title at Wimbledon and his participation in the Olympic Games in Tokyo, we understand his decision. We wish him all the best for the rest of the season" , said tournament director Karl Hale in a broadcast.

Goffin is also missing

The tournament director's rejection of Thiem & Co also hurts: "It's a shame that Dominic Thiem, David Goffin and Stan Wawrinka will miss the National Bank Open this year," said the tournament director. "We wish you a speedy recovery from your injuries and hope to see you competing again soon. Hopefully you will all be back in Toronto the next time we host the ATP Tour."

The Toronto ATP Masters 1000 event will start on August 15th.
