Australian Open: First corona infections among the players

According to the Victoria State Department of Health, there have been three positive corona tests among players who want to take part in the Australian Open. Who is affected has not been disclosed.

The corona problems before the Australian Open of tennis professionals in Melbourne are getting bigger. According to information from the responsible health authorities, reported active participants also tested positive for the virus for the first time in the run-up to the first Grand Slam tournament of the season due to two further infections. In addition, the test of another person from the tournament environment gave a positive result.

Overall, the number of infected people from the tennis convoy rose to eight. Two further cases were classified as no longer contagious, given that the infection had already been overcome.

Kerber and Andreescu in quarantine

The names of the new corona patients are not known. The Victoria State Department of Health only said the infections had been detected in one woman in their twenties and two men in their thirties.

A total of more than 1000 professionals and companions traveled down under in specially chartered aircraft. After positive test results in three machines, the authorities ordered 72 tennis professionals, including the former Melbourne winner Angelique Kerber (Kiel), a strict quarantine in the hotel rooms without opportunities for training. The first five infections did not affect professionals. However, the group of people who tested positive included Sylvain Bruneau, the coach of the former US Open winner Bianca Andreescu (Canada).
