Austria's tennis boom in the Corona year

With his achievements and the coronation with the first Grand Slam title at the US Open, Dominic Thiem lays the foundation for golden years in Austria's tennis sport. Broadcast times and media reports on Austria's number 1 contribute to this. Last year we were able to show the positive feeling in numbers together with eTennis . As a partner of hundreds of tennis clubs and facilities in the field of digitization, eTennis is now again providing interesting figures on tennis in Austria this year.

Austria's tennis clubs are looking forward to happy years

Corona lockdown

It was mid-March 2020 when Austria's tennis clubs were already in the middle of preparing for the new tennis year and were slowed down by the lockdown. Space repairs could not be planned or implemented, or only with great uncertainty. Unclear and regionally different regulations did not make the situation any easier. Sport Austria and the Austrian Tennis Association tried to shed light on the darkness with information campaigns. A survey by eTennis together with tennisnet.com caused waves after more than 800 tennis clubs took part and expressed their opinion on the restrictions. Through contacts with the Ministry of Sports, the results were presented in the form of the 10 Tennis Commandments - and tennis was promptly on everyone's lips in politics. Finally, Sports Minister Werner Kogler thanked us for our commitment in his press conference and in mid-April gave the tennis clubs the green light to start on May 1, 2020.

Season start

The joy was enormous. Tennis sand and appointments with the companies for spring repairs were tight, because every facility wanted to be ready for the start of the season. What followed can definitely be described as a success story. The influx of tennis clubs was great after many team sports were not possible at the time. Many soccer players switched from the green grass to the red sand, which was reflected in the number of members and an additional utilization of the facilities.

We were able to record an increase in membership of 100 adults and children and 150 games in our pyramids of demands and will now expand our facility by another tennis court due to the high occupancy. Thanks to the statistical evaluation of the space occupancy in our eTennis portal, we were able to convince our community of the expansion.

The tennis boom in numbers

Probably the best overview in Austria has someone who helps to save the officials a lot of time and ensures that the tennis clubs can grow without increasing the effort for the officials linearly. As CEO of eTennis, DI Andreas Munk has analyzed the reservation hours and comes to a positive result.

The trend of recent years was more than confirmed in this year's Corona year. In a sample of 100 participating Austrian clubs of various sizes and regions, a growth in seat reservations of 22.9% between the beginning of April and the end of August could be determined between 2019 and 2020.

At my home club, too, we were able to achieve, in addition to many new members, an increase of more than 50% to over 600 hours of play per pitch from May to mid-September.

Largest platform for tennis clubs

Tennis clubs, sports facilities and tennis halls in seven European countries and more than 85,000 tennis players use eTennis. The growth is enormous, not least due to the activities related to the Corona Lockdown survey. As an Austrian success story , eTennis supports the digitization of sports facilities and clubs and thus helps to save a lot of time for volunteer officials or operators of commercial facilities and to stimulate gaming operations. An all-in-one portal has emerged from an initially pure reservation platform. Public relations, claims and tournament systems, light and access control, online payment and much more make eTennis unique in function and quality on the market.

In addition to seat reservation with billing, online payment and extensive statistics, the tennis clubs also have functions to improve public relations with eTennis: Homepage, event management with registration function, team management with appointment coordination for team captains and newsletter function facilitate the flow of information.

Demand pyramids and tournament grids enliven the club and reduce the administrative workload for the board. Thanks to the automated membership fee accounting, the cashier is also relieved despite the increasing number of members.
