The Swiss made a statement to his fans on Sunday evening, wanting to give them a brief update on what had happened since the Grand Slam tournament at Wimbledon. There the Swiss failed surprisingly clearly in the quarter-finals to Hubert Hurkacz, since then it has become quiet around the 40-year-old. From a sporting point of view, Federer only announced the cancellations for the Olympics and the two ATP Masters 1000 events in Toronto and Cincinnati.

The news is not good, it becomes clear early in the video. He did not go through an easy time and underwent many examinations to find out whether he had further worsened his knee injury, which forced the now 40-year-old to undergo two operations last year.

No alternative to surgery for Federer

"I did a lot of examinations with the doctors on my knee. I continued to injure myself during the lawn season and that's just not the right way to go on," said the Swiss in a video on social media. He was on crutches for a few weeks and tennis was out of the question for the coming months anyway. "So it will be difficult," said Federer.

He would have spoken to many doctors who told him that he would have to have another operation to feel better.
