Nick Kyrgios will not come to Berlin

Nick Kyrgios will not come to Germany due to the tense Corona situation in his home country Australia. And in the women's division, Latvian Anastasija Sevastova steps in for Frenchwoman Caroline Garcia, who had to pass due to a foot injury.

Alexander Zverev gave no further reason for his waiver of the "double pack" in Berlin: "His management has informed us that he does not want to play a tournament for the time being and will therefore not travel to Berlin," explains organizer Edwin Weindorfer. "We are disappointed with this decision, because in our view it would have been a good chance for Alexander Zverev to focus on his tennis again in front of an audience in Berlin after the turbulence," adds Weindorfer.

Sevastova steps in for the women

Weindorfer says of Nick Kyrgios' withdrawal: “The coronavirus crisis has intensified again in Australia. When we hired Nick Kyrgios for Berlin in May, this development was not to be expected. As can be said at all, in the time marked by Corona, there are always problems with the organization of tennis tournaments that have never been known before. “Weindorfer and his team are now making intensive efforts to compensate for the losses by making new commitments. "Time is extremely pressing, but we will do everything we can to find possible 'last minute options'," said Weindorfer.

Anastasija Sevastova has already done that for women. The 30-year-old Latvian has four tournament victories on the WTA tour and is the best world ranking position eleven from October 2018. Sevastova is currently 43rd in the WTA ranking.
