Billie Jean King Cup: Austria fifth overall after defeating Turkey

Marion Maruska and Barbara Haas are happy about their fifth place at the BJK Cup tournament in Turkey

The Austrian women's tennis team finished Europe/Africa Zone I of this year's Billie Jean King Cup with a win: After the players around captain Marion Maruska finished the group stage in third place, the ÖTV team won on the last day of the tournament the placement game for the fifth overall place against the hosts from Turkey with 2:0.

First, Melanie Klaffner won after 2:07 hours of play 6:3, 5:7, 6:2 over the world number 551. Zeynep Sönmez, then Barbara Haas won 6: 4, 6: 2 over Berfu Cenzig in her singles comeback after a six-month break. In the end, the doubles was not held. Hungary, Slovenia and Croatia advanced to the playoff tournament in November, while Estonia and Georgia were relegated to Europe/Africa Zone II.
