Canada pulled off an upset in the semifinals of the Billie Jean King Cup in Seville, defeating the Czech Republic 2-1. Gabriela Dabrowski and Leylah Fernandez secured the decisive point for the North Americans in the all-important doubles match.

Barbora Krejcikova had previously put the Czech Republic in the lead with a clear 6:1 and 6:2 win against Marina Stakusic, before Fernandez equalized with a 6:2, 3:6 and 6:2 victory over Wimbledon winner Marketa Vondrousova. In the doubles, Fernandez then prevailed alongside Dabrowski with 7:5 and 7:6 (3) against Katerina Siniakova and Krejcikova.

In their first Billie Jean King Cup final, the Canadians will face Italy on Sunday. Martina Trevisan and Jasmine Paolini made things clear against Slovenia after the two individual matches .
