At the end of the day, the isolated German tennis fans in Marbella still had reason to celebrate: Tamara Korpatsch beat fourth-placed Arantxa Rus 6-0, 6-7 (5) and 6-3 in the Estadio Manolo Santana thus ensured the only black, red and gold victory on Wednesday.
Korpatsch now meets Panna Udvardy, who beat Nastasja Schunk, who was born in Mainz, 6:3 and 7:6 (2). In addition, Anna-Lena Friedsam lost to Martina Trevisan 1:6 and 4:6.
Kohlschreiber against Taberner on Thursday
In the men's game, Yannick Hanfmann was clearly beaten by the Spanish veteran Pablo Andujar 4:6 and 0:6 in the first set, despite a 4:2 lead. So Philipp Kohlschreiber, who meets Carlos Taberner on Thursday, is the last German man in Marbella.
Meanwhile, Stan Wawrinka was able to look forward to success, at least in the doubles competition. The three-time Grand Slam winner, who lost in straight sets to Elias Ymer in singles on Tuesday , won 4-6, 7-5 and 11-9 against Sadio Doumbia and Fabien Reboul at Andujar's side. The two will now face top-seeded duo Aleksandr Nedovyesov and Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi.
