Daniil Medvedev still sees the old hands in front

Daniil Medvedev has impressed with a duet on Instagram in the past few days: The whiz kid of the past season whined something for his dog, the learned animal immediately replied to his owner. It was more human in the next insta-live chat, where Medvedev took a stand on the ever-young question of who would now finish the big three Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer at the Grand Slam tournaments.

Medvedev himself suddenly had the chance of a sensation at the 2019 US Open after a weak start against Rafael Nadal, but in the end was unable to use his options. The same goes for Dominic Thiem, who even led 2-1 in the Australian Open final against Djokovic.

It is not yet clear whether there will still be Grand Slam tennis in 2020. But should the plan of the French Tennis Federation, after which the French Open should start with the main field matches on September 27, work, Daniil Medvedev sees only very vaguely that a player from the coming generation could win the title.

Wawrinka last winner

"It depends on when we start again," said Medvedev. "" If we start in Roland Garros, for example, then I can say that it will be very difficult to get a new champion. You have to win seven matches in a Grand Slam. It is always my goal to do my best. But it’s difficult with the Big Three up there. ”

The 24-year-old from Moscow has proven last year that Medvedev can also win big titles: with the victories at the ATP Masters 1000 tournaments in Cincinnati and Shanghai. By the way, the last player who is not called Djokovic, Nadal or Federer and was able to win a major is Stan Wawrinka. The Swiss managed this feat at the 2016 US Open.
