One thing was already certain before the group draw for the intermediate round in the Davis Cup 2023: Neither Germany nor Austria will be involved in the decisive phase of the traditional team competition this year. As is well known, Germany lost 3-2 to Switzerland in Trier in February, Austria lost to Croatia in Rijeka.
As in the past two years, four nations have raised their hands to host the event: Spain (Valencia), Great Britain (Manchester), Croatia (the exact venue has not yet been decided) and Italy (Bologna). Defending champions Canada have to travel to Bologna, where they meet the strong hosts around Jannik Sinner. Switzerland around Stan Wawrinka plays in Manchester.
There was already play in Bologna and Valencia last year, when the German Tennis Association raised its hand as the organizer. And at Rothenbaum in Hamburg, the group with Australia, France and Belgium is housed.
And this is how the individual groups came about:
- Group A (in Bologna): Canada (holders), Italy, Chile, Sweden
- Group B (in Manchester): Australia, Great Britain, France, Switzerland
- Group C (in Valencia): Spain, Serbia, Czech Republic, Korea
- Group D (in Croatia): Croatia, Netherlands, USA, Finland
The winner of the Davis Cup 2023 will be determined again in Malaga. The two best in each group qualify for the big showdown.
