What stage of the Davis Cup are we in?

On Saturday, February 4th and Sunday, February 5th, the Davis Cup qualifiers for the group stage of the Davis Cup Finals will be played. Austria meets Croatia. A total of twelve matches are scheduled for this weekend. From September 12th to 17th, the twelve winners will then work out places for the final phase at the end of November with the already qualified nations Canada (title defender) and Australia (last year's finalists), as well as the two wildcard nations Spain and Italy. The twelve losers also have to fight against relegation to World Group I in September.

Where is the game played?

From the Austrian point of view, the international match will be held away at the Sportska Dvorana Zamet in Rijeka. The game is played indoors on a hard court at around 10-14 degrees outside temperature. Rijeka is a Croatian port city on the northern Adriatic and is currently home to 128,624 inhabitants.

Who is in the squad?

Austria travels to northern Croatia with practically the best cast. In addition to the former world number three Dominic Thiem, non-playing captain Jürgen Melzer has called up the individual players Jurij Rodionov and Dennis Novak for the duel against the first seeded South Slavs. In doubles, the currently best placed doubles team Lucas Miedler and Alexander Erler will most likely start the race. The Croatian captain Vedran Martic can also draw on the full - at least nominally. How fit Marin Cilic is again after his recent knee operation will only be seen in the coming days. In any case, the 2014 US Open champion is the number one home team in the game. In addition, the two singles players Borna Coric and Borna Gojo, as well as the top doubles duo Mate Pavic and Nikola Mektic are in the Croatian squad. Two singles games are on the program on Saturday, followed by doubles and two more singles on Sunday.
