Once world number three, Ferrer played for Spain in the Davis Cup for 16 years and was part of the winning team three times. "The Davis Cup is a unique event," said the 40-year-old: "Everyone wants to win the trophy at least once in their career."

This year, 16 teams will again play in the final round. The group stage from September 13th to 18th will take place with four teams each in Hamburg, Bologna, Glasgow and Valencia. Germany meets France, Belgium and Australia in Hamburg. The two best teams from each group will contest the so-called "Final 8" from November 22nd to 27th in Malaga. Defending champions Russia are suspended from the competition until further notice due to the war of aggression in Ukraine.
