When the Laver Cup kicks off in Boston on Friday, one man will be the big absentee: Roger Federer. The 20-time Grand Slam champion will not take part in the duel between Team World and Team Europe after his new knee operation. A particularly bitter news for the Swiss, as he, as a co-founder, always acted as the face of the Laver Cup.

Well, Fernando Verdasco did not play such an important role in the reorganization of the Davis Cup, but at least the Spaniard has always been a big fan of this team competition. Apparently the much discussed change in the tournament format did not change that, as Verdasco will act as tournament director this year.

"I am particularly pleased to join the Kosmos team at this edition of the finals and to take on the role of tournament director for the first time. The Davis Cup is a special competition for all players. (...) I am honored to be to bring my experience and to work with the whole team so that players, associations and fans have a great experience and take away great memories, "said the Madrilenian.

Verdasco temporarily takes on the role of Albert Costa, who will be absent this year due to "personal reasons". The Davis Cup finals will take place in three cities - Madrid, Turin and Innsbruck - for the first time in 2021 and will mark the end of the current tennis season from November 25th to December 5th.
