Next bad news for the Italian Davis Cup team: In addition to Jannik Sinner, the country's number two, Matteo Berrettini, will also be absent from the final tournament in Malaga. As a result, Lorenzo Sonego and Lorenzo Musetti will lead the Italian team in the singles. However, the role of favourites, which the team would have held with their two top players, must be given up by Musetti and Co in this line-up. In Canada with Felix Auger-Aliassime and Denis Shapovalov, for example.

For Berrettini, as for Jannik Sinner, it is one of many setbacks in the 2022 season. Most recently, "The Hammer" was in place at the ATP 250 final in Naples, and since then the Italian has had to postpone his comeback to the ATP tour again and again due to injury . Berrettini is currently in 16th place on the ATP charts, at the beginning of the year Berrettini was able to reach his career high with sixth place.

"Unfortunately I lost the race with my recovery process to be ready in time for the Davis Cup Finals," Berrrettini wrote on Instagram on Sunday. "The medical experts have informed me that after the foot injury I sustained in Naples, I am still not able to play at my highest level. There is no greater honor than representing Team Italy, so this news is very difficult to take. I will still travel to Malaga with the team to support them as much as I can."
