It was two individual games at the highest level that Jordan Thompson and Tallon Griekspoor, and Alex de Minaur and Botic Van de Zandschulp offered the spectators of the first Davis Cup quarter-finals in Málaga, Spain. While Thompson won 4:6, 7:5, 6:3 after almost three hours, de Minaur got a hard-earned 5:7, 6:3, 6:4 win after a 2.38 hour fight.
Lleyton Hewitt, Australia's Davis Cup captain, was more than satisfied with his team in the subsequent press conference, but also admitted that both games could easily have ended for the Dutch protagonists. "It was great tennis, especially the second game. The last few games were probably the highest level of the whole match."
"Great to play in front of so many people"
"I'm really proud of my boys. They gave their all. They came, they did all the training and preparation we asked them to do. They really deserved to get that result tonight," said the former number one in men's tennis.
Australia's number one, de Minaur, praised the great atmosphere in the packed tennis hall in southern Spain: "Although they obviously didn't support us, it was great to see the Netherlands getting such support from the spectators. It was great to play in front of so many people. We were in Madrid and played matches where there were hardly any people - same in Hamburg. We're far from home but it's great to see that even a lot of Spaniards came, and created a great atmosphere."
Australia will meet either Spain or Croatia in Friday's semi-finals, who will play their quarter-finals today from 4pm, streamed live on ServusTV On.
