A major change awaits tennis fans in November when the completely renovated Davis Cup is held for the first time. From November 18, 18 teams will compete in the Caja Magica in Madrid for the title of the prestigious team competition.

Roger Federer will be a big present. While other superstars like Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal will be doing their homework in good health in the Spanish capital, the maestro will not start in Madrid. The reason for this: Switzerland missed the qualification for the final.

Federer criticizes the new format

Initiator Gerard Pique has still not given up hope of being able to greet the 20-time Grand Slam winner one day at the Davis Cup final in Madrid. "We are talking to him and his manager about whether there is a possibility that he will play in 2020," the Barcelona defender told Sport Business .

Federer had previously criticized the new format sharply: "The Davis Cup should not be the Pique Cup." The 38-year-old also emphasized that the tournament was created for a "new generation of players". Whether Federer will really play in Madrid next year can therefore be doubted.
