Tallon Griekspoor clashed with Martin Cuevas in the Davis Cup duel between Uruguay and the Netherlands.

The Davis Cup duels in South America can sometimes develop a special momentum of their own is well known. The Austrian Davis Cup team, for example, can sing a song about the fact that the atmosphere in the stadium during the international duels against Uruguay in Montevideo in 1994 and especially at the meeting with Brazil in Sao Paulo in 1996 was more like a cauldron than a relaxed coffee party.

And the World Group I duel between Uruguay and the Netherlands this weekend was really hot. The fact that the hosts' fans have practically not entered a tennis stadium for two years, and as a result had built up a lot of emotions, probably did not make for a deeply relaxed sporting pleasure in Montevideo. To make matters worse, the local heroes also had to do without their number one man Pablo Cuevas, who is again suffering from knee problems.

Switzerland hui, Greece ugh

From a sporting point of view, the argument for the men around captain Paul Haarhuis was clear, neither Botic Van de Zandschulp nor Tallon Griekspoor had to give a sentence in their individual games and the double experts Matwe Middelkoop and Wesley Koolhof had an easy game with the South Americans. So the duel was decided for the guests after the first three games. The mood in the stands was clearly heated, which was ultimately felt on the pitch when Martin Cuevas let himself be carried away with a physical attack after his defeat against Griekspoor.

Further results from World Group I on Sunday: Brazil beat Lebanon 4-0 away, Romania won 3-1 at home against Portugal and Peru struggled to win 3-2 at home against Bosnia-Herzegovina. The pairings Bolivia against Belgium (current status 2: 1) and Argentina against Belarus (2: 1) have not yet been decided. Interesting results from World Group II: Switzerland beat Estonia 5-0 at home with Dominic Stricker and Henri Laaksonen, Greece lost 3-1 to Lithuania without Stefanos Tsitsipas and Turkey finished Latvia 4-0.

The eight best-placed winners from World Group I advance directly to qualification for the 2022 finals, while the four other duel winners play a knockout round among themselves. The two winners can also try their hand at qualifying while the two losers, like all other losers in the World Group I duels, have to compete in the playoff against the winners of the World Group II competitions.
