Lorenzo Sonego gave Italy a 1-0 lead with a win over Frances Tiafoe

Strong start for the Italian team in the quarter-finals of the Davis Cup Finals in Málaga: Lorenzo Sonego defeated Frances Tiafoe in two sets 6:3, 7:6 (7) after almost two hours of play, giving the men a 1-0 lead Team captain Filippo Volandri. The 27-year-old from Turin managed a real surprise, as he is 26 ranks behind Tiafoe (currently number 19) in the ATP ranking and was also in the head-to-head with the US player before the game with 0: 1 behind.

In the next singles, the two ones of the respective teams Lorenzo Musetti and Taylor Fritz face each other. The only duel between the two so far was won by the American in three clear sentences in the first round of the Grand Slam tournament in Wimbledon.

In what could be a crucial doubles match, Simone Bolelli and Fabio Fognini would go head-to-head with Tommy Paul and Jack Sock. The winner of the tie will face either Germany or Canada in the semifinals on Saturday.

Here is the overview of the tie from Málaga.
