David Haggerty, the US President of the World Tennis Association ITF, had four locations to choose from, and the choice to visit the intermediate round of the Davis Cup 2022 fell on Bologna. Not a bad decision when you look at the full ranks (in Italian matches) and the line-up of the hosts, who played the full band with Jannik Sinner, Matteo Berrettini, Lorenzo Musetti, Fabio Fognini and Simone Bolelli.

Hopefully Haggerty will not have been surprised that the popularity of a match between Croatia and Sweden in the middle of Italy is rather weak. The Davis Cup has recently been selling itself as the “World Cup of Tennis”, there is probably no equivalent in the entire sport to the willingness of football fans to travel, who accompany their national team everywhere. Whereby this pilgrimage with the venue Qatar will also be put to the test.

"Ask what we can do better"

"We have to keep working on having people in the stands," Haggerty said in a video interview with the Ubitennis portal. "In some matches we succeed, in some not." They want to work on that. Exactly how, Haggerty left open.

In principle, however, the ITF President is satisfied with the current solution. "This year we added a new dimension with the four-venue group stage, which I think is very good," Haggerty continued. “We have a home and away atmosphere in four different cities, the Davis Cup is held worldwide and the final is in Malaga. But we will look at the Davis Cup every year and ask ourselves what we can do better.”
