Andrey Rublev had always struggled in his encounters at the Davis Cup final tournament in Madrid. Also because he had had weak phases after mostly good starts. Rublev also managed to get off to a good start against Dominik Koepfer. From a German point of view, however, one would have wished for a short hangover. But it never came. And so Rublev went through his game mercilessly, won 6: 4 and 6: 0 and put Russia 1: 0 ahead.

Rublev hit too many first serves and kept turning up his forehand. Koepfer, on the other hand, never found the match - as he did in Innsbruck against Jurij Rodionov. After only 50 minutes of playing time, the drama came to an end.

Now it is up to Jan-Lennard Struff to prevent the German team from leaving. Struff, however, has a mammoth task ahead of him. He plays against Daniil Medvedev, second in the world rankings. And in contrast to Rublev, he has not yet shown any weaknesses during the Davis Cup in 2021.
