Davis Cup: Sinner and Sonego too strong for the USA

Host Italy beat the USA in the Davis Cup finals in Turin after the singles matches. Lorenzo Sonego won against Reilly Opelka, Jannik Sinner defeated John Isner.

The 20-year-old South Tyrolean impressively demonstrated at the ATP Finals last week that Jannik Sinner feels at home in Turin. Sinner came up as a substitute for his injured compatriot Matteo Berrettini, defeated Hubert Hurkacz with a flawless performance and had to admit defeat to Daniil Medvedev despite leading in the third set.

Berrettini is absent from the Italian team this week due to his abdominal muscle injury, Sinner moved up to number one in the Squadra Azzurra. And mastered the first task in Turin with flying colors. He defeated John Isner after a playing time of only 62 minutes 6: 2 and 6: 0 and gave the Italians an unassailable 2-0 lead. Previously, Lorenzo Sonego had put Reilly Opelka in their place with 6: 3 and 7: 6 (4).

Lopez puts Spain in the lead

In Madrid, veteran Feliciano Lopez first triumphed: The 40-year-old defeated Roberto Quiroz 6: 3 and 6: 3, giving the Spaniards a 1-0 lead over Ecuador. The hosts, who won the first edition of the final tournament in 2019, currently have to do without Rafael Nadal. Roberto Bautista Agut and Carlos Alcaraz also dropped out at short notice. The latter delivered a positive sample for the corona virus on Thursday.

In Innsbruck, Dusan Lajovic brought the Serbian team to the front against Austria with a marathon win against Gerald Melzer. Lajovic won 7: 6 (5), 3: 6 and 7: 5 and provided Novak Djokovic, who is playing the second match against Dennis Novak, with an assist.
