Davis Cup: Thiem is defeated by Coric, Austria loses 1: 3
Nothing came of the big comeback of the Austrians in Rijeka against Croatia. After Dominic Thiem's defeat against Borna Coric, the hosts are already the winners.

Austria has to be relegated again in the Davis Cup in 2023. After Alexander Erler and Lucas Miedler had made it 1: 2 after a dramatic match against Ivan Dodig and Nikola Mektic, Dominic Thiem had to admit defeat to Croatian number one Borna Coric 6: 7 (3) and 2: 6.
Thiem showed a strong fighting performance, came back in the first round after a break deficit, but then Coric had to admit defeat in the tie-break. In the second set, Coric managed to take Thiem's serve to make it 3-1.
Dennis Novak Coric lost 3: 6 and 5: 7 on Saturday. After that, Borna Gojo was able to make it 2-0 for Croatia with 6:3 and 7:6 (2).
So the excellent performance by Erler and Miedler went unrewarded. Like last year, Austria has to fight to remain in the world group in September. In 2022, Pakistan had worked without any problems. The possible opponents will be determined this week in World Group 1.
