Tomas Berdych was extremely successful during his career in the Davis Cup

In 2019, Tomas Berdych finally hung up his racket and at least saved himself the last two corona seasons on the ATP tour. As an interested observer of international tennis events, the Wimbledon finalist from 2010 is still back in the public eye. The Czech recently gave an interview to the daily newspaper "Daily Mail" in which he commented on the current Davis Cup mode.

The form of the event does not meet with enormous approval, neither from him nor from his ex-colleagues. The positive response from the global tennis community is also rather subdued, to say the least. The mare would much rather see the old system reactivated - but with a different time rhythm: "If the Davis Cup were to be held every two years, the whole world would go nuts."

"Much more special than what we have now"

Berdych knows what he's talking about: The former world number four won the renowned team competition for the Czech Republic twice with his teammates (2012, 2013), reached the finals in 2009 and the semi-finals in 2010 and 2015. “The best players in the world want to win this tournament for their country. But due to the fact that it is played every year and the season is very long, it is normal for many players to prefer to rest. "

The 36-year-old's idea isn't entirely new now, but it could rekindle a meaningful discussion about the future of the Davis Cup. Berdych adds: “It would be enough to fix it for the end of September or the beginning of December. That would encourage the best players to play the Davis Cup again. I think it would be a lot more special than what we have now. "
