The group phase at the Davis Cup 2022 brought Valencia, as the venue for mid-September, a real tennis festival: With Spain, Canada and Serbia, Losfee led three absolutely top nations into a preliminary round group at the traditional team event. The latter would have been led in Spain by figurehead Novak Djokovic, a 21-time Grand Slam winner.

Now it is clear: Djokovic will not be able to start for Serbia in Valencia after all. This was announced on social media on Monday morning. According to this, team boss Viktor Troicki is said to have confirmed the cancellation of the 21-time major winner in the local media on Serbian television: "He will not play for personal reasons," said Troicki.

Djokovic in possible final round

"He's been there for the national team countless times, but this time he can't. If we make it to Malaga, he'll join us," said the former 12th in the world rankings. The group stage for Davis Cup 2022 will take place from September 13th to 18th, just a few days before the Laver Cup, where Djokovic has confirmed his participation.

Why the sixth in the world rankings will be absent in Valencia is not yet known. Djokovic made his last appearance on the ATP tour in Wimbledon - and won the number 21 Grand Slam title there. Djokovic cannot take part in the US Open that is currently taking place due to a lack of COVID-19 vaccination.
