After several intensive training sessions in Hamburg, Zverev surprisingly had to stop his training match on Sunday due to pain in his right foot. team doctor dr. Tim Kinateder then advised the Hamburger against a mission this week.

The second in the world rankings tore all three outer ligaments in his right ankle in the semi-finals of the French Open and underwent surgery in Munich at the Center for Orthopedics and Sports Medicine at the beginning of June. Since then, Zverev has been in rehabilitation and was ready to make his comeback in Hamburg.

“Being at the Davis Cup in my hometown of Hamburg was my big goal, which has kept me motivated over the last few weeks. That this dream has now burst makes me incredibly sad. I've tried everything to be here, but these new complaints are forcing me to withdraw. I will still stay in Hamburg and support the team from the bench," said Alexander Zverev.

Hanfmann as the third individual player

Davis Cup captain Michael Kohlmann nominated Yannick Hanfmann for Zverev.

“The fact that Alexander cannot play is very painful for both him and us. He's a player who makes the difference and his retirement will make it harder for us to reach the final in Malaga. But I'm convinced that the team is now even closer together and can compensate for his absence with Alexander's support on site. Yannick's willingness to step in immediately shows what a great sense of togetherness there is in this team," said Davis Cup captain Kohlmann.
