Thiem is the first Austrian since Thomas Muster in 1996 to win the title in Barcelona.
With this success, Thiem is only the second player after Roger Federer, who has won two tournaments this season. Thiem previously in Indian Wells, Federer in Dubai and Miami.

In the semi-final against Rafael Nadal and in the final against Daniil Medvedev, Thiem only lost his serve once.
Overall, the Lower Austrian rushed to Diego Schwartzman, Jaume Munar, Guido Pella, Nadal and Medvedev for the title without losing a set.
For Thiem it was the third title at the 500 level. The first came in Acapulco in 2016, the second in Rio de Janeiro in 2017.
For Thiem it was the ninth title on sand, the 13th overall.
