End of an era at Wimbledon: The Duke of Kent steps down as President of the All England Club

An era in the Wimbledon Grand Slam is coming to an end. The Duke of Kent has headed the All England Tennis Club since 1969 - after this year's championships on Church Road, he is stepping down from office.

He presented trophies in a row to Boris Becker, Roger Federer and even Rod Laver - now, after more than five decades, an era at Wimbledon is ending: Prince Edward, the Duke of Kent, will become president of the hosting All England after the current championships at the tennis classic Club (AELTC) withdraw. The AELTC announced this before the final weekend in Wimbledon.

The Duke of Kent presented the trophies on more than 350 occasions. The now 85-year-old made his first appearance in this capacity in 1969, when he recognized the Australian icon Laver and Ann Jones as champions.

"It was an honor to serve this remarkable institution as long as I have," said Queen Elizabeth II's cousin: "This tournament and the   Watching tennis grow and inspire generations over five decades has been an extraordinary experience and I'm incredibly proud to have been a part of it. "
