The final for the Erste Bank Open 2021 is still scheduled for next Sunday, October 31st. The meeting between Frances Tiafoe and Lucas Miedler, which was about one of four vacancies in the 32 grid, spread something like a final mood in the well-attended Wiener Stadthalle a week before the big final chord. And that was mainly due to Miedler, who showed a very strong performance against the favored American. In the end, however, Tiafoe prevailed with 6: 7 (5), 6: 4 and 6: 3.

Miedler had already caused a surprise on Saturday with the success against Peter Gojowczyk. A few weeks ago, the German had advanced to the second round of the US Open as a qualifier, Miedler was only moderately impressed and won in two sets. Against Tiafoe, the number one in the qualification, the Austrian won the first round - and caught up with a 1: 4 deficit in the second. After that, however, Tiafoe prevailed, Miedler could no longer equalize the break to 1: 3.

The afternoon in Vienna was not over for Lucas Miedler: Together with Alexander Erler, he also had to play in doubles. After the clear success against Simone Bolelli and Maximo Gonzalez, it went for Erler / Miedler, who won the title in Kitzbühel in the summer. against Sander Gille and Dominik Koepfer. Not in the town hall, however - but on the second court, which was set up on the grounds of the Vienna Ice Skating Club.
