Tournament director Herwig Straka wanted four to five top ten players for the Erste Bank Open 2021 in the Wiener Stadthalle. And as an absolute top star, Olympic champion Alexander Zverev could serve at the traditional tournament in the Austrian capital. Although the field of participants will not be officially announced until next Tuesday, according to tennisnet information, Zverev will be there. In any case, Herwig Straka did not want to deny this when asked.

Alexander Zverev is playing an outstanding season in 2021: In Madrid and Cincinnati, the Hamburg native won two more titles at ATP Masters 1000 events, he now has a total of five successes in the second highest tournament category. The emotional highlight was certainly the triumph at the Olympic Games in Tokyo, where Zverev put an end to Novak Djokovic's dream of the "Golden Slam" in the semifinals.

Zverev last participated in Vienna in 2017

Most recently at the US Open, the German number one had to admit defeat in the semifinals Djokovic in a tough five-set match, but certainly also contributed to the fact that the world number one lacked the necessary freshness in the final against Daniil Medvedev. Thanks to his strong performance, Alexander Zverev has moved up to fourth position in the current ATP world rankings.

For Zverev, a return to the Wiener Stadthalle is announced after a four-year break. In 2017, he failed in his last appearance in the quarter-finals due to Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. If you want to watch the Olympic champion live at work, you must either be vaccinated or have recovered. This should be the prerequisite for attending the Erste Bank Open, whose main draw matches begin on October 25th.
