Daniil Medvedev won his second title of the season at the Erste Bank Open in Vienna and thus crowned his strong tournament week in the Austrian capital. The number one of the event defeated 23-year-old Denis Shapovalov in the final after a set deficit 4: 6, 6: 3 and 6: 2.

If Medvedev had not yet received a break in the tournament so far, he had to give up his serve twice against Shapovalov right at the beginning of the match. After breaks to 2: 1 and 4: 1, the Canadian was already clearly in the lead in set one, but the number one of the tournament fought back again.

Shapovalov brings set one in dry cloths

Medvedev closed the gap to 3:4, but missed the final comeback in the opening set in the tenth game due to a few minor mistakes. Despite some uncertainties, Shapovalov was able to use his third set ball after a wonderful net attack to make it 6:4.

In the second set, Medvedev managed the first break to make it 3-1, but Shapovalov didn't give up and continued to play his merciless offensive tennis. The world number 19. took the serve from his opponent from Moscow to 3: 4, but then threw in a weak game on his own service and had to accept the set equalization a little later.

Medvedev untouchable in decision set

In the third set there was nothing left for Shapovalov. Medvedev served impressively, showed extremely strong tennis from the baseline and repeatedly knew how to drive his opponent to despair with ingenious counterattacks. After two hours and 16 minutes of play, the Russian turned his seventh match point into a 4: 6, 6: 3 and 6: 2 win.

While Medvedev celebrated his second title of the season after triumphing in Los Cabos, Shapovalov still has to wait for his first title of 2022. Both players will continue next week at the ATP Masters 1000 tournament in Paris-Bercy.
