Even the qualification for the ATP 500 event in Vienna can certainly be classified as top-class. The tasks for the three Austrian wildcards, Lucas Miedler, David Pichler and Alex Erler, were correspondingly difficult. After Miedler failed in the second match of the day against the Italian Lorenzo Sonego, David Pichler is now also eliminated.

The Burgenland met Aljaz Bedene in the first qualification round. The high-serving Slovenian made a lightning start in the first round, but David Pichler was unable to counter Bedene in set one. With 6: 0, the 31-year-old made 1-0 sets after less than 30 minutes.

Erler ends Austrian Day

Sentence two initially looked like it would be a particularly quick affair. Bedene made the early break again and remained untouchable on his own serve. But David Pichler didn't want to give himself up so easily, at least with his own serve, the Burgenland now acted significantly better. At the end of this match, however, this could not change much, Aljaz Bedene presented himself too strongly as a server in this duel. The last service game of this game was symptomatic of this: The Slovenian started with three aces and after almost exactly an hour secured the 6-0 and 6-4 victory.

Aljaz Bedene now meets the Miedler conqueror Lorenzo Sonego. Meanwhile, a third Austrian is in action in the last individual match of the day. Alex Erler will serve for the second time in his career in the Vienna qualification, but has got a very difficult lot with the Canadian Vasek Pospisil. In the main field, however, are Dennis Novak, Jurij Rodionov (each wildcard) and the defending champion Dominic Thiem.
