The contingent of Austrian participants at the Erste Bank Open 2022 was halved on the second day: After Jurij Rodionov's 4: 6 and 4: 6 against Denis Shapovalov, only two local heroes are still represented in the 32 grid in the Wiener Stadthale. Dominic Thiem, who had to fight Tommy Paul after Rodionov. And Dennis Novak, who mimics the opening opponent for Stefanos Tsitsipas on Wednesday. Filip Misolic was eliminated by Francisco Cerundolo on Monday.

Rodionov picked Shapovalov himself out of the lottery wheel on Saturday. Which led to a certain amusement. Because this duel between two left-handers was almost exactly two years ago. At that time, Jurij Rodionov was surprisingly able to assert himself in two sentences. There was no question of that this time. Shapovalov gained an early lead in both sets. And didn't let himself be irritated by Rodionov's smaller comebacks in the meantime.

Shapovalov in the round of 16 against Fritz

Whereby: After Rodionov had fended off three match points at a score of 3: 5 in the second set, Shapovalv was still sweating a bit. Served to win after fending off four break points (the first and fourth each with an ace). In the round of 16, Denis Shapovalov now meets Taylor Fritz, who was able to assert himself against Yoshihito Nishioka in three sets at the start.

In the first match of the day there was also a victory for the favorites on the center court in the Wiener Stadthalle: Grigor Dimitrov won against the qualifier Thiago Monteiro 6:3 and 6:4. At the same time, first Daniel Evans against Oscar Otte and then Emil Ruusuvuori fought their way into the round of 16 in two sets each.
