Erste Bank Open: From Melzer to Thiem - the Vienna winners since 2010

Dominic Thiem is going to the Erste Bank Open starting on Monday in the Wiener Stadthalle as defending champion. Jürgen Melzer demonstrated at the beginning of the last decade how to win twice in a row at the largest Austrian tennis tournament. We look back on the winners since 2010.

What is even better than a home win? Perhaps the repetition and therefore confirmation of it. And so after his triumph in 2009 (back then in the final against Marin Cilic), Jürgen Melzer won the title again in the Wiener Stadthalle the following year. In 2010, the opponent in the final was Andreas Haider-Maurer and it wasn't missing much for the outsider to have entered the list of winners. In the end, however, Melzer prevailed with 6: 7 (10), 7: 6 (4) and 6: 4.

In the following year, too, the final was over three sets. Jo-Wilfried Tsonga knew how to prevail against Juan Martin del Potro , who was able to assert himself against surprise man Grega Zemlja a year later. For Tsonga two more finals should follow in the town hall, but it was not enough for a second title.

Murray wins two titles in Vienna

Tommy Haas got it in 2013 by beating Austria specialist Robin Haase in the final. Haas had already succeeded in Vienna in 2001, at a time when the finals were still played in the best-of-five mode. What hadn't helped Guillermo Canas much further, the Argentine lost to Tommy Haas twelve years before his second tournament victories in three sets.

In 2014 Andy Murray Vienna gave the honor - and fought against David Ferrer to his first success. The second was to follow in 2016, then against Tsonga in the final. The 2015 title went to Ferrer, who defeated Steve Johnson in three sets in the final. Lucas Pouille extended Jo-Wilfried Tsonga's malaise in Vienna finals in 2017, and in 2018 it was Kevin Anderson's turn, who won against Kei Nishikori in straight sets.

The end of the 2010s was then sealed by the triumph of Dominic Thiem , exactly ten years after Jürgen Melzer's first victory in Vienna. And the way to the title was really not easy for Thiem almost a year ago. For example, he had to defeat his feared opponents Fernando Verdasco and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, later Matteo Berrettini and in the final his mate Diego Schwartzman. In 2020 the competition will be even greater - after all, Novak Djokovic, the world's number one, has announced his start in Vienna. And Djokovic has only lost one match on the regular route this season: against Rafael Nadal in the final of the French Open.

Here are the finals in the Wiener Stadthalle since 2010:
