Unlike in his first two rounds, in which Thiem had made a break right at the beginning, the Austrian did not start the game well against Ruud on the Court Philippe Chatrier and had to give up his serve to make it 3-1 in his view . An extremely intense encounter quickly developed in which Thiem equalized to 3: 3 after defending against three breakballs and subsequently took the lead for the first time thanks to a weak service game from his opponent. After another contested game, Thiem increased to 5: 3, but then left a set ball at Service Ruud. On his own serve, the world number three then closed the sentence - after 58 minutes Thiem was able to cheer the 6: 4.
The 27-year-old took the momentum from the first round well and used his sixth break ball to quickly lead 1-0. Since Thiem's serve still did not work as desired (only 52 percent first serves in the opening sentence), the 21-year-old Norwegian repeatedly came up with opportunities in the Lichtenwörther's service games. Mostly Thiem solved the pressure situations - as well as two breakballs at 2: 1 in round two - but with flying colors.

This should be the last sticky situation in section two. Thiem made a lot of steam, especially with the forehand, but in the end it was the backhand that won the set for the 27-year-old: With a sensational blow along the line, the two-time French Open finalist secured the 6: 3 and also the right to to be able to present in round three with own surcharge.
The world number three had hardly any problems with his own service, while Ruud was more and more troubled by the increasingly dominant Lower Austrian. This should soon be reflected on the scoreboard: Thiem took a 4: 1 lead relatively quickly and increased this lead to 5: 1 with another break.

"I'm very happy. It was a great match. I hardly made any mistakes. The conditions under the roof are very good," said Thiem on the court. "I tried not to give him a chance in the third set either. Because he always fights to the end, "the 27-year-old continued.
