Cori Gauff , 17-year-old super talent from the United States, has won two WTA tournaments in her still very young career. In 2019, in only her second professional season, she achieved her first tournament victory at the indoor hard court tournament in Linz with a three-set win over Latvian Jelena Ostapenko. And just a few days ago she followed up with another tournament success at the WTA 250 clay court event in Parma, Italy, with a clear 6: 1, 6: 3 final win against the Chinese Wang Qiang. So the shape is right.

Yesterday, the crowd favorite from Delray Beach benefited in the third main round of the French Open from an injury-related abandonment of her compatriot Jennifer Brady, who was eleven places better. After just 23 minutes of play, the 26-year-old from Harrisburg, Pennsylvania had to go to the handshake early. “I thought about not running here. Until the day before it started. So I thought I might as well try it. Today I woke up and it was worse, I couldn't play my game, ”said the visibly disappointed number 13 in the world after the game that ended abruptly.

One man's sorrow, the other's joy: The chance for Gauff has never been so good to make it into the round of the last eight in a Grand Slam tournament. Was the end of the round of 16 at Wimbledon 2019 against the seven seeded Simona Halep (Romania), the US-American had to go 6: 7 (5th place) at the Australian Open of 14-ranked Sofia Kenin (USA) after winning the first set ), 3: 6, 0: 6 beaten. At the current edition of the French Open, Ons Jabeur from Tunisia is now waiting for the young super talent, a very experienced but quite feasible task.

The two neighbors in the WTA rankings - Gauff is one place ahead of Jabeur in 25th - have clashed three times in the last two years, with "Coco" winning twice.
