Anyone who has only seen the end of the first set of the game between Jan-Lennard Struff and Diego Schwartzman without a view of the previous history may have come to the conclusion: It's a shame for the German, the tie-break was lost after a net scooter, but it will be in the Best-of-five format played. There is still something going on. In fact, Struff had led with two breaks and 5: 1 in the first round, giving six set balls before the tie-break. With the 9:11 in the tiebreaker, Struff's spirit was already too broken. Schwartzman won 7: 6 (9), 6: 4 and 7: 5. In the quarter-finals he will meet either Jannik Sinner or Rafael Nadal, to whom he was defeated in the semifinals last autumn.

A strong tournament came to an end for Struff with the defeat against Schwartzman. Whose big highlight was the opening triumph in five sets against Andrey Rublev. Then the Warsteiner acted confidently against Facundo Bagnis and Carlos Alcaraz. And took this momentum with him into the initial phase of the match against Diego Schwartzman. And found him again towards the end of the third set: Struff came back from a 4-0 deficit. But it was no longer enough for another tie-break. Schwartzman closed the match with a backhand passing ball.

From a German point of view, all hopes rest on Alexander Zverev. He will meet Spaniard Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the quarter-finals on Tuesday, whom Zverev clearly defeated at the US Open 2020.
