Jannik Sinner and Pierre-Hugues Herbert fought each other on the Suzanne-Lenglen court for 3:32 hours. And experienced a rollercoaster of emotions: First, Sinner clearly dictated the pace, and got the first round without any problems. Then Herbert gave the game a new twist, not only won the second round, but was also in the lead in the third act with two breaks and 5: 2. Sinner came back - only to lose in the tie-break. In the fourth set it really looked like a home win: Already at 3: 4 Sinner fended off several breakballs, a few moments later also a match ball.
In the decision, an early break was enough for Jannik Sinner to leave the court for the first time as the winner of a five-set game with 6: 1, 4: 6, 6: 7 (4), 7: 5 and 6: 4. The youngster had lost his two previous ones: in 2020 at the US Open against Karen Khachanov and earlier this year against Denis Shapovalov at the Australian Open.
In the two all-US duels of the day, John Isner and Steve Johnson prevailed. While Isner went straight through in three sets against Sam Querrey, Johnson had to make up a two-set deficit against Frances Tiafoe.
