When asked how to defeat Rafael Nadal in Roland Garros, the great Mats Wilander, himself a three-time champion at the French Open, said: The key is to play the Spaniard as flat and as quickly as possible in his forehand. Easier said than done, it is well known that only Robin Söderling and Novak Djokovic have accomplished the feat of putting Nadal in Paris' place. Because it is not so easy to heed Wilander's advice to hit Nadal's balls with a lot of spin and speed.

Jannik Sinner could do that. Whether it is more than five sentences, the proof is still pending. After all, the young South Tyrolean won a Grand Slam match over the full distance for the first time in round one of the French Open against Pierre-Hugues Herbert, even after defending a match point. Nadal's task at the French Open is the sport's greatest, with all due respect for the intelligently playing Herbert.

Nadal clear favorite against Sinner

There have been two matches between Rafael Nadal and Jannik Sinner so far, both on clay, both of which the Spaniard has won. Sinner was close to it in the first few sentences last autumn in Roland Garros and a few weeks ago in Rome, after which Nadal's work really started to run. And once you're trapped in the matador's mill, most of the matches are over.

So the question will be whether Sinner's maturation process is progressing fast enough to become the third man after Djokovic and Söderling to defeat Rafael Nadal on sand in Paris. The bookmakers at mybet definitely lack the belief for this: They see Nadal with a rate of 1.07: 1 clearly at an advantage. A surprise from Sinner would bring the odds of 9: 5: 1.
