The bare numbers speak for themselves: Yes, Andrey Rublev needed a few minutes to really get used to the conditions on the Bois de Bolougne, but the Russian was not really in danger in his first round duel with South Korean Soonwoo Kwon. 6: 7 (5), 6: 3, 6: 2 and 6: 4, that's the balance of the Russian's first day of work at the French Open 2022.

What the numbers don't show: the second major event of the year for the seventh in the world rankings almost came to an end. After Rublev lost round one in the tie-break, the fuses blew at the 24-year-old. First, the Russian fired a ball onto the player's bench, then Rublev smashed his drinking bottle - and was given a code violation.

Rublev meets Delbonis

Andrey Rublev was quite lucky, the ball - unhappily bouncing back from the bench - just missed the head of an approaching helper by a hair's breadth. Yes, the young gentleman's skullcap was shot off. In the event of a body hit - similar to Djokovic's disqualification at the US Open 2020 - there would have been only one decision for the game director.

From a sporting point of view, the Russian recovered after this freak and the duel with Soonwoo Kwon was under control. Federico Delbonis is now waiting for the 24-year-old in the second round - the Argentine didn't give Adrian Mannarino a chance in round one. In the lower half of the draw, however, Rublev has the chance of a deep run, a possible opponent in the quarter-finals is compatriot Daniil Medvedev. Who is known to feel only partially comfortable on sand.
