French Open 2022: Nadal without problems in round two, Wawrinka loses

As expected, Rafael Nadal advanced to the second round of the French Open 2022 without any major problems. The 13-time champion beat Jordan Thompson in straight sets. Stan Wawrinka, on the other hand, was eliminated right at the start.

Rafael Nadal started the French Open in style. The Grand Slam record champion from Spain prevailed in his first round duel in Paris 6: 2, 6: 2, 6: 2 against the tirelessly fighting Australian Jordan Thompson. Nadal has already won the most important clay court tournament 13 times and is again one of the favorites this year with world number one Novak Djokovic (Serbia) and shooting star Carlos Alcaraz (Spain).

However, Nadal's preparation for Paris was not ideal. At the Masters in Rome, the 35-year-old failed physically in the round of 16 against Canadian Denis Shapovalov. Before the start in Roland Garros, however, he was unimpressed. The pain in the foot is always there, "it won't go away," said Nadal, who also paused in April because of a stress fracture of a rib: "It's about whether the pain is so severe that I don't stand a chance."

Wawrinka loses to Moutet

At the Australian Open in January, the Mallorcan managed to hide his problems. He won his 21st major title overall, breaking away from Roger Federer and Djokovic (both 20 titles). Now he wants to get back on the throne in Paris: last year Nadal failed in the semifinals against Djokovic.

Almost parallel to Nadal's advancement, Stan Wawrinka, the 2015 champion, had to say goodbye. Wawrinka lost on the Suzanne-Lenglen court against local hero Corentin Moutet 6: 2, 3: 6, 6: 7 (2) and 3: 6. The reward for the French: A meeting with Rafael Nadal in round two.
