Roger Federer presented his work-life balance to the public at the latest ATP finals in London: after his first match, he would give himself a day off, giving the family preference over an additional training session. Well, Federer did so according to one of his claims for underground performance against Kei Nishikori. And the success also proved the Swiss right: In the group phase, Federer won the following two matches.

One against Dominic Thiem . Who has had a different approach to load management for years. After the match is always before the match. No matter when the next appearance is due. In the case of Thiem , this is scheduled to be Thursday, only the weather could object to this. So Thiem doesn't think much of Federer's theorem of the exercise break. He had booked a court for Tuesday at 2pm.

Thiem can get going

At the beginning, his punches were not as powerful as they were after, Thiem summed up after his opening win against the amazing Tommy Paul. A problem with which the Austrian had to fight in Rome when he lost to Fernando Verdasco. The sticking point in the match was, of course, the tie-break won, in which Thiem had trailed 0: 4. Which basically looks worse than it actually is.

In the fourth set, however, Dominic Thiem got into a gear that dictated the match as one would have expected from the start. However, the German Davis Cup captain Michael Kohlmann raised concerns about a player who had traveled in good shape. "Paul has won a lot lately, as a player you know what works and what doesn't," says Kohlmann. "And it doesn't matter whether you're playing against number four or 104."

Federer practices with Nishikori

With the successful match ball, the challenges on the Suzanne Lenglen court for Dominic Thiem weren't over. Fabrice Santoro, the old French fine spirit, conducted the on-court interview with the last year's finalist, which was very well received by the audience. Because of the success of recent years, but of course also because of the liaison with local heroine Kristina Mladenovic. So a few words to the remaining fans in their national language were announced, Thiem also struggled through this test, if not yet enough to meet his own demands.

His French worked quite well in a small group, Thiem explained at his press conference. It was something else in front of an audience. Fortunately, many spectators would have left the stands at this point. "They have already seen the horror coming," smiled Thiem.

In this regard, Roger Federer enjoys the natural advantage of the Swiss. The Maestro also resumed work on Tuesday. Fittingly with Kei Nishikori. The man who took his appetite for tennis for a few hours in November 2018.
