In round one against Tommy Paul Dominic Thiem also had to play against the darkness, for the second match of the Roland Garros campaign 2019 against Alexander Bublik, the Austrian had been drawn by the opening match on the Philippe Chatrier court. And after a blitz start, two local lows in sets two and four, an overall but concentrated performance, Thiem sat down after a playing time of 2:30 hours with 6: 3, 6: 7 (6), 6: 3 and 7: 5 .

24 minutes were played, Thiem had already won the first set 6: 3. Up to that point, Bublik had not recorded a single breakball, the previous year's finalist had everything under control. In the second round, Thiem's lack of concentration was enough to let Bublik come into the match. The Kazakh made the break 3: 1. Thiem ran after, managed the rebreak to 4: 5, recorded a set ball in the tie break - and still had to accept the equalization after 74 minutes of play.

Now Pablo Cuevas is waiting for Dominic Thiem

In the third round, Thiem handed in a particularly strong return game, he strategically sprinkled it over 5: 3 and served for another set lead. Bublik was still not interested in offering his opponent any kind of rhythm. And humorously used an opportunity to 2-0. Again, the outsider did not manage to reserve the set, Thiem came to the rebreak to 4: 5. And Thiem continued at a fast pace, breaking 6: 5 - and moving on to round three after 2:30 hours of play.

The relief was noticeable after the end of the game: The most important thing was the victory, that Bublik would not give him a game rhythm, he knew, but he would have had problems with it, said Thiem in an on-court interview with Cedric Pioline. Bublik would have played with two first serves, always taking maximum risk.

An old acquaintance is waiting there with Pablo Cuevas: Thiem has already played five times against the man from Uruguay, once also at the French Open. In 2015 the Austrian lost in the second round in four sets.
